Guardianships and Conservatorships
Guardianships and conservatorships are ways you can get the help you need if you are incapacitated. Both are appointed and monitored by the court. Guardians have more power in that they can sign legal documents for you. Conservators usually help people with everyday items like keeping books, writing checks, paying bills and other assistance to help people stay in their homes. These are often used to help people with Alzheimer's disease or other illnesses that make it difficult to keep up on finances or legal issues.
Mary Watson, an attorney in our office, has been the President of MAGiC – Minnesota Association for Guardianship and Conservatorship, and is active in issues surrounding this area.
